Introducing
Word of Mouth as a Channel
Every successful business knows that relationships are one of a business’s most valuable assets.
Our vision is that businesses should nurture all their relationships (not just ones driving towards a sale) and make word of mouth a channel for growth.
Successful businesses have a lot in common
How does a successful business grow?
When you ask a successful business where they get new customers, referrals or word of mouth are almost always in the answer.
The key is successful businesses value relationships.
Word of mouth done right can amplify the efforts of all your marketing channels.
The big question
So, what is word of mouth as a channel?
Successful businesses often rely on many different marketing channels. Paid ads, content marketing, social media, and email marketing are among the most popular. But word of mouth is never mentioned as a channel. Why is that?
What makes a marketing channel?
A marketing channel is measurable. Data matters. Marketing is no longer just spray and pray. To be successful today, a smart business needs to be able to track the results of their efforts and prove the ROI.
A marketing channel can be influenced. Channels seldom just work on their own. A marketer needs to be able to improve the results of a channel through tactics, strategies, and applying more resources to it.
Word of mouth adds a lift to all your marketing efforts, giving you a better ROI for all your marketing channels.
Doesn't word of mouth happen by itself?
Yes, organic word of mouth does just happen, and it’s wonderful and should be celebrated, but it’s tough to count on.
To drive organic word of mouth, one needs to consider other areas of the business that depends on more than just marketing.
When asked how a business can get more word of mouth, the typical response is, “Just do good work and hope people refer their friends.”
Hope is not a strategy. An increase in word of mouth can be orchestrated.
How does this differ from word of mouth marketing?
Word of mouth marketing (WOMM) is a confusing term. Wikipedia defines the term quite broadly and across multiple areas outside of a marketer’s control.
We view word of mouth as a channel (WoMaaC) in- line with Wikipedia’s definition of “Direct WOMM” where WOMM has higher levels of control (influence).
This allows WOMaaC to be inclusive of many marketing techniques that can now be grouped together based on their ability to influence word of mouth.
