Setting up a multi-step candidate referral program ✅
Catapult, a leading on-demand staffing company for hospitality and retail, knew that referral marketing worked after running a “test” manual program. But the team quickly realized they needed to replace spreadsheets with an automated system that made it easy to scale and manage candidate referrals.
To get started quickly, Catapult integrated Referral Rock with both Mailchimp and their own internal application and staffing portal via Zapier. This allowed them to create a multi-step referral process with built-in promotion of the program. The process:
Catapult automatically signed up new members in Referral Rock after they filled out an application in the staffing portal
⬇️
These new members were added to a Mailchimp email campaign: 4-5 emails over a 5-week period, which included the member’s unique sharing link
⬇️
Catapult created a personalized landing page for new referrals to fill out an application; once filled out, referrals were captured and tracked in their staffing portal
⬇️
The referral status automatically updated when a candidate who applied via the referral application worked their first shift
⬇️
Members were automatically rewarded £20 for every qualified referral (any referral who worked a first shift)

Optimizing for the best results 🎯
Six months after launching the automated referral program, Catapult generated 4500+ referrals and increased web traffic by approximately 50,000 sessions.
Yas Desai, business development manager at Catapult, attributes this growth to the ongoing promotion of the program and ease of access for members (no logins needed!). This, combined with active personalized language in emails and landing pages, encouraged members to be creative in where and how they shared their referral link.
Desai’s top tip: Put in the effort to test and optimize all components of your referral funnel, from invite emails to members to landing pages where you capture referrals. By understanding how members and referrals flow through your program and where they drop via the Referral Visits dashboard, you can make changes to copy and creative until you get the results you want.
“Referral Rock allowed us to automate our entire referral process,” said Desai. “Now that it’s set up and optimized, it just runs in the background.”
